My Review

Before the Storm by Claire Ashgrove
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I loved this book! Claire Ashgrove is a brilliant writer! there was so much adventure, magic and intrigue that I couldn't put the book down for a second. Halle's story was captivating from the very first pages.

Halle's story was full of adventure, and danger, with many bumps and bruises along the way but she was always so strong and she always got up and dusts herself off to try harder or try again. she gets strength from her new friends and gains strength from her powers, and she learns to put the troubles of the past behind her.

Claire Ashgrove tells Halle's story so well that you immerse yourself right into the story so much to the point that you feel what Halle feels, you fall when Halle falls and you are lost when Halle is lost. Claire takes you into the life of a girl broken and afried and turns her around to be one of the strongest people you would ever want to meet.

My Favourite Character was Marcus. He was kind, dark, sexy and brooding (my kind of guy!...lol) I really liked the way him and Halle clicked. I really liked Kale but I like the dark and brooding type more then the blond blue eyed type.

I really can't say enough about how much I loved this book! you must TBR and get your copy today!

Character Profile

Halle Rhoads
Windwalker

Age: 22

Height: 5’ 9”

Greatest Strength: Self-reliance and adaptability.

Greatest Weakness: Stubborn determination.

Personality: She keeps her emotions close to the vest, often lashing out when people get too close. Fiercely determined to protect those she loves, she can be impulsive. Beneath her tough outer shell, she needs to be accepted.

Brief History: After murdering her abusive father, she’s been living on the streets and keeping a watchful eye on her younger sister. Most of Applegate, Oklahoma believes she’s dead, and she’s more than happy with that assumption. She trusts no one, knows how to survive on her own, and fears nothing…except the one thing she guards more closely than her sister. Her heart.

From the Book:
I’d just spent four, never-ending hours watching over this guy. Now he wanted to lecture me on safety. I let out a snort of disbelief. “Fat lot of thanks I get for keeping watch over your ass. Talk about ungrateful.” I stood to stretch my cramped legs and walked the line of trees behind me.
“You hit me with a lightning bolt!”
“So you do remember. Why don’t you try remembering why you tackled me in the first place? Then maybe we can go our separate ways. I have things to do.”
“Like kill your uncle the same way you killed your dad?”
Kale’s low, calculated voice halted me in place. He knew. No one knew. No one except my aunt. And in the time I’d spent out here thinking, I’d come to the solid conclusion she wouldn’t tell. Slowly, I turned to look at Kale. “Excuse me?”

Character Interview

Hello Halle and Welcome to my blog!

Will you Tell us a little about yourself. Where do you fit into the story? What should we know about you?

This is my journey of discovering who I am, what I am, and how to cope with it.  Having grown up on the streets, trust has always been difficult for me.  So when Kale Norwood showed up out of nowhere, telling me he could teach me how to use the dark power I have, but can’t control, believing him was a little hard to do.  Curiosity won out, and what’s inside these pages is the result.

So what is it like having magic? And did you see your powers as a gift or a curse?

It’s frustrating as hell, considering it doesn’t cooperate when I want it to.  I’m not sure I’ve ever really thought of it as either, to tell you the truth.  It served a necessary purpose when I was fourteen, and that’s when I discovered I had the ability.  I didn’t really try to use the gift until my uncle put my sister in danger.  And that’s when Kale showed up and all hell broke loose.  Now that I know what it is, and I know where I fit into the world around me, I definitely consider it a gift…or maybe a cursed gift.

What would you say has been the toughest part of your journey so far?
Hands down, trust.  I’ve learned everyone always wants something and nothing comes for free.  And yet, when you are forced to depend on people you have to put yourself out there.  Deciphering who was safe to trust, who I could believe, and who could share the burden of my secrets—that was, and still is, incredibly difficult.

What would you say makes you laugh out loud?

Tufty.  Though I never really saw myself with a pet – and certainly not a duck for God’s sake! – the lil’ guy cracks me up.  Other than that, probably a good comedy show, though it’s been forever since I’ve had a chance to kick back and watch t.v.

What’s your greatest source of frustration?

Kale.  (Chuckles).  No, I guess it all ties back to my magical limitations.  I can feel the power in me, yet it doesn’t cooperate like I want it to.  I know why, and Kale frustrates me because while he’s so supportive, he’s had a very difficult time accepting the truth of what I’ve discovered I am.

Why do you think Beth hates you so much?

I have really no true idea, although she thinks I’m a detriment to Kale.  I am guessing it boils down to jealousy; that I may be stronger than she is magically.  That she feels somehow threatened by me.

Do you think the reason Kale and you are together is because of the dark link of magic between you? or because of the strong love you share?

Neither, if you want the truth.  When you face death with someone, when you’ve worked together as we have, there’s a bond that forms.  Sure, it doesn’t hurt when you’ve got major chemistry, but it goes deeper than that.  I understand him, and he understands me, even though we aren’t all that similar and at times we are on completely opposite sides of the same issue.  That he believes in me, went a long way toward opening me up to him.  So, if you want something short and concise, I’d have to lean toward love being the glue.  But really, it’s so much more, and the bonds run far deeper.

Thank you so much for coming by to answer a few questions Halle. We look forward to more of your adventures!
